The Gonterman Shrine Mailbag!
Here we'll be collecting some of the mail we get sent here at the Gonterman Shrine. They'll be anonymous, to protect...well, you know. Anyway, here's a sampling of our mail. Insight will be provided, fun will be had, et cetera. Enjoy! |
Dear JSP, THANK YOU!! Oh Lord it was good to find your site (through the courteous reference of Jen White in a private email). I feel like I have found a support group! Reading through the FAQ, it was almost as if I had written it myself! At last, someone else - heck a group of someone elses who have seen The Davey-kins and reacted the same way! I have never had direct contact with DG, although I have come close several times. I was first exposed to his work, Sailor Moon USA, through a Jen White MiSTing. I looked through some of his online work at the time (by this time the infamous Sailor Moon Kitsune was removed from the Net) and as an illustrator/cartoonist I *wanted* to see him succeed. From the tremendous output I kept telling myself eventually I'd get to something somewhere in his archives that was good! And then.... I began to get angry with him. He had to get better! He was offending me by his inability! How dare he call himself an illustrator?! I'm an illustrator! I'm struggling to play the freelance game too. (I don't have comic book aspirations though, and I definitely don't get the furry thing!) I drafted several letters to try and convince him to go back to school for more training, and each time held back on sending them because I knew, from reading his posts, that there was just no way he would view it as anything but a personal attack. I think my helplessness at not being able to communicate with him was the source of my frustration. My wife couldn't understand why I kept going back to his site, when I'd only wind up angry, but it was the deer in the headlights phenomenon of his art. Tonight... tonight was a cathartic release. I read through all his online comics at your Gonterman Shrine and laughed until I was breathless, and tears rolled down my face. My wife also thanks you for finally turning around the DG experience for me. I had learned to accept his failures but I hadn't totally released that frustration before. Your editorial comments were especially entertaining as I shared those same thoughts as I was reading each comic page, only to find them echoed underneath. This is a matchless undertaking, and I thank you for putting it all together with humour and more respect than I was able to give him. The Internet's Most Dangerous Cartoonist.... how right he is for the wrong reasons :) Thank you. (Note from JSP: This is the best email ever. EVER.) |
Hi, nice site! Thoughtviper.geo has great taste
for craziness. I think I'll link it to my own homepage.
Anyway, I came to rant about my Gonter-experience. I run a small club on Yahoo! that features mature artwork with Mega Man characters by myself and other club members. You might know a little bit about that game series. Unfortunately, Davey does, too. Dave, like most members, dropped a request in our message board. It went a little something like this: Gonty: I know it's a *Mega Man* Yaoi club, but I'd like to see more of Roll-chan, who's my favorite in the series. I even made some original characters inspired by her. I took like any of the usual requests I get. I just
replied: I didn't know who he was at the time. Just someone named Davey. Davey then took that moment to fling some unwanted advertising in my club, that's what made me aware of who he was. He could tell that me, nor anyone else, cared about his Roll-inspired character. Usually, normal people let it blow by or don't mention it, but we know Davey. Here he is: Gonty: You can see my answer to Roll, complete with outfit, in my own site's Fandom Club at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/foxfandom . Also, I invite you all to visit the said site at http://foxfire.twu.net . I have a new comic strip that's currently running, and I'm always looking for artists who want to hone their skills with my projects :) The foxfire URL really gave it away. I checked out his tiny, tiny club. Talk about changing the subject. At the time the "interpretation" pic wasn't posted in my club. Apparently this was a way for him to meathook more "fans". My response: Me: Hey! YOU'RE Davekins! Hi Davey! I read the MST to your fanfic "Blood and Metal." Pretty cool, story and MST. Feel free to post your Roll pics here, if you want. Ach, I never though you'd be the the type to like etchi, but I learn new things everyday! I meant to be lighthearted on the MSTing subject. I read the MST. Shay Caron couldn't help BUT make fun of Davey in this MST; he made himself a lead character! She wasn't insulting the author, but there was no other way..hehhe. Anyway, I thought Davey would just ignore the MST. I thought he'd be a nice guy deep down inside, but, ah-ha, his true colors show: Gonty: If that's the case, then you don't know me _at all_. I extremely suggest that you read the stories I have right now and forget that my Fanficts--and those (expletive] MiSTings that _I didn't even create, DAMNIT!!--ever existed. Geeze. That was just rude. Here was my final reply: Me: Uh... Okay... Just said I saw the MST is all. I know Shay Crayon [sic] produced the MST, blah-blah-blah. Excuse me for enjoying parodied humor every now and then. It's not my fault you're taking the MST as a direct insult (Which you shouldn't, you were the lead character; couldn't be helped. ) => Anyway, this is a RM club and I don't feel like yakking about self-promotions. You could have easily posted your Roll-inspired pic (If you haven't yet.), but that's ok if you're new to Yahell clubs. And I HAVE read one of your non-MSTed works. In fact, it was a comic (The Sailor Moon one.), and, being blunt, I don't wanna read it again. I also read the Blood and Metal unMSTEd comic. That one was a bit better. (Smell the sarcasm) But please, lets talk about RM-etchi stuff. If you can contribute to the club, like I said before, feel welcome. I don't believe in advertisement in my club (That usually results in deletion, but I'm pretty lenient.) Please don't take any of this as an insult. Your last message was uncalled for and pretty harsh, and shows how much you can't take a joke. I thought you'd be a pretty good guy in actuality. Sooo... Who's gotten far in X5 yet? A show of hands, please. Dave's final reply: Gonty: My apologies to those who found my response to be a bit harsh, but if you knew the whole story, which I won't discuss here, you will understand why I snap at anyone who mentions those old fanfics and Mystery Science Theater 3000 in the same sentence. Let's just say that the backlash I got wasn't even close to "parody humor". I'll upload the pic I've done, as a change in subject and appeasement offering. :) He posted it. I saw the pic. I felt so goddamned
cheated. Here was the comment he used on the posting of
the picture "Tara Kit", a bad combination of
Tails and Roll: I draw and paint myself. I'm never one to criticize someone's techniques or work of any kind, media, form, ect. But, when you suffer from delusions of grandeur like Davey there, you're nothing but asking for it. -iGoGo P.s. Check out his Yahoo! Profile @ http://profiles.yahoo.com/daveykins_62040 Ladies, he's into dominance! |
(JSP Note: The next email details the "furry
rock band" in the misc. art 2 section. Turns out I
was wrong...) Well, as my sister and I were the
ones who unwittingly designed these |
Hiya! I just sort of stumbled onto your site
(god only knows how). I just had a quick comment.. the pink stuff mentioned on page 2 of Nitro means sweet'n'low. The blue stuff (Equal) and creamer for his coffee, but he won't drink the stuff in the pink packages (sweet'n'low). For that matter neither will I... Whoops, me again... :> I wasn't intending to
mail again, but since you |
